To Ollie, it felt like yesterday that he had this conversation and got his D.I.D. Five years before Ollie was born, everyone in the United States was given a free gigabit internet. The government would pay to have it installed no matter where you lived. The only caveat was that after the roll out, it was a law that everyone over the age of 13 had to register for a D.I.D.

Ollie remembered the happiness he felt the day he got his first D.I.D.. He would never forget the surprisingly weighty feel of the thin metal card. He could see and feel, Oliver Evans: 7 July, 2017 etched into the front of his card. Little did he know that this would change everything. As all of his peers got their D.I.D.s they all grew distant. He and Michael never climbed to Silver Springs together again and they all became attached to their computers.

On Ollie’s 16th birthday, it was revealed that the reason that the government had started offering the D.I.D.s was to monitor everyone’s internet usage. While this did not phase the majority of the population and wrote it off as a safety precaution, Ollie could not handle it. As soon as he could, he built his small home near Silver Spring and vowed to use the internet only when absolutely necessary.
